Smartphone Design Is Rapidly Maturing

May 11 2012   4:07PM GMT Posted by: EdFrmBrighthand Android, BlackBerry, RIM, Samsung, Smartphones An article on Brighthand this week had a statement that surely caused some people to blink. The comment came from analyst Craig Mathias, who said, “We will see relatively little evolution in terms of industrial design going forward.” I tend to agree with this,...

Apple iOS 5.1 Is Kind of a Dud

Mar 14 2012   12:56PM GMT Posted by: EdFrmBrighthand Apple Apple released an update for the iPhone’s operating system last week. Sadly, the move from iOS 5.0.1 to iOS 5.1 offered very little for users of this smartphone. I’ve been using it for a week now, and I’m completely underwhelmed. This is too bad, as there’s a long list of potential enhancements that could...

Microsoft Employees Forbidden to Buy Apple Products

Mar 21 2012   4:29PM GMT Posted by: EdFrmBrighthand Apple, Microsoft An internal Microsoft memo that has leasked out indicates that Microsoft employees are no longer allowed to use company funds to purchase products made by Apple. This is a sign that the competition between these two has heated up again. Way back in the 1980s, Microsoft and Apple were bitter rivals...

Apple iOS 6 Will Remove Some Long-Held Limitations in the iPhone

Jun 20 2012   8:58AM GMT Posted by: EdFrmBrighthand Uncategorized Apple CEO Tim Cook took the wraps off iOS 6 last week, and much of what he said was music to the ears of long-time users of the iPhone and iPad — some of the most irritating limitations in these devices are being taken out. There’s going to be a new Maps app that will finally include turn-by-turn navigation,...

Larry Page Is Destroying Google

Mar 15 2012   6:54AM GMT Posted by: EdFrmBrighthand Google I realize the title of this post sounds melodramatic, but the sentiment behind it isn’t my own. It comes from James Whittaker, formerly the Engineering Director at Google. Whittaker says that, since Larry Page took over as Google CEO, the focus of the company has moved from making great products to making...

How HP Pulled the Rug Out from Under Palm

Mar 18 2012   9:14PM GMT Posted by: EdFrmBrighthand HP, Palm Palm, Inc. was one of the great “rags to riches to rags” stories in American business history. At one point this company was considered serious competition for Microsoft, but now it’s completely gone. HP played a big role in finishing it off, and some of the details on how this happened have recently...

Sprint Has 4G LTE Smartphones But No LTE Network

Apr 24 2012   7:05AM GMT Posted by: EdFrmBrighthand Samsung, Sprint Sprint released its first 4G LTE smartphones on Sunday, even though it doesn’t have an LTE network… yet. This company finds itself in a tough spot. Two years ago it became the first carrier in the U.S. with a 4G network, but it picked the WiMAX standard for this. Unfortunately for Sprint, just about...

iPad: The Frequent Traveler’s Companion

Apr 5 2012   9:09AM GMT Posted by: EdFrmBrighthand Apple For the past week or so I’ve been on a cruise down the Rhine River through Switzerland, France, Germany and (soon) Holland. I’ve noticed a trend: the Apple iPad is the most carried computer on the ship, by a wide margin. I haven’t down an exhaustive survey of my fellow travelers (I’m on vacation after all)...

Nokia’s Lumia Sales: It’s All About Expectations

Apr 17 2012   2:59PM GMT Posted by: EdFrmBrighthand Microsoft, Nokia, Windows Phone An article on Brighthand today covers complaints from some Europe-based wireless service providers that sales of the new Nokia Lumia Windows Phones are low. Curiously, U.S. carriers are happy with their sales of Nokia’s smartphones. This is about expectations: Nokia’s Symbian device...
